Calibrating a thermometer

1. Take 2L of water and stir in about 10 ice cubes (2cmx2cm).

Add more ice cubes when those have dissolved, continue until there are about

20 ice cubes mostly intact and no more will dissolve.

This is a reference for 0 C.

2. Take another 2L of water and heat over a heat source until the water

is aggresively bubbling. Turn off the heat source. This is a

	reference for 100 C.

3. Mix water from the two sources in the following proportions

cold water	temp x 10 ml

	hot water	(100 - temp) x 10 ml

Stir lightly for a few seconds.

e.g.

	20 C

	cold water	20 x 10 ml = 200 ml

	hot water	(100 - 20) x 10 ml = 800 ml

	mixed 200 + 800 = 1,000 ml at 20 C

Calibrate the thermometer at 10 C, 20 C etc.

The stiring should ensure good mixing.
